Aesthetic Services

At BKLYN Cardio, we offer aesthetic services to treat varicose veins, a condition in which veins close to the skin become swollen and enlarged. Although it can happen anywhere in your body, it usually affects the legs and feet.

Our aesthetic services aim to improve the appearance of your body affected by varicose veins. Our team believes in a comprehensive approach that goes beyond just treating varicose veins. We also focus on improving the overall health and function of your vascular system.

Understanding Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are twisted, swollen veins visible just under the skin. These veins look like blue or purple squiggly lines or bulges. Spider veins are smaller, milder forms of varicose veins that appear as red, blue, or purple lines branching out from a central point.

Veins have one-way valves that open and close to help blood in your legs flow toward the heart. Weak or damaged valves can cause blood to pool and increase pressure on the walls, which may cause veins to bulge and get distorted. Varicose veins can also form due to increased blood pressure.

Risk factors for developing varicose veins include:

  • Older age
  • Lack of exercise
  • Family history of varicose vein
  • Being inactive for long periods
  • Hormonal changes in women
  • Excess weight
  • Excessive tobacco use

Symptoms of varicose veins may include:

  • Visible bulging, bluish veins
  • Change in skin around the veins
  • Swelling in your legs
  • Sores on your legs
  • Aching pain in the legs
  • Sensation of heaviness in your legs and feet
  • Leg cramps at night
  • Itching or burning sensation around the veins

Untreated severe varicose veins can lead to long-term swelling that may cause more serious skin and tissue problems, including ulcers and non-healing sores. At BKLYN Cardio, our team provides prompt attention and comprehensive treatment for varicose veins to limit their impact on your well-being.

Our Approach to Varicose Vein Treatment

Dr. Matthew Jones, our interventional cardiologist, has extensive training in vascular health and offers minimally invasive aesthetic treatments for varicose veins. These treatments address not only the cosmetic concerns but also improve overall leg health.

Before treating your varicose veins, Dr. Jones performs a preliminary examination to rule out potential complications associated with the varicose veins, including bleeding, blood clots, ulcers, and chronic venous insufficiency (inadequate blood flow through your veins).

He may then recommend additional tests for a comprehensive evaluation.

At BKLYN Cardio, we design personalized treatment plans for varicose veins based on the severity of your condition. Treatments for varicose veins may include one or more of the following options.

Compression Stockings

Wearing compression stockings effectively improves blood circulation and reduces pain and swelling in your legs associated with chronic venous insufficiency. It squeezes the veins and prevents blood from pooling.

You may be asked to wear these stockings every day. Compression stockings are available at most pharmacies, and prescription-strength stockings are also available.

Wound Management

Varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency may cause open wounds in your leg. We offer treatment for the wounds to enhance healing and prevent infection.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a chemical solution into the affected vein. The solution causes the walls of the vein to stick together, turning it into scar tissue. These veins then no longer carry blood and eventually fade away over time. Sclerotherapy does not require anesthesia. It is usually done to make the veins look aesthetically better. The procedure can also alleviate symptoms related to varicose veins.

Before the procedure, we perform your physical examination to examine your veins and check for blood vessel disease. We may also ask for recent illnesses or medical conditions, allergies, and medicines or supplements you take.

During the procedure, you will be asked to lie down with your legs slightly raised. Our team will clean the area to be treated. We use a small needle to slowly inject the solution into the vein, which irritates the vein lining, making it swell shut and block the blood flow. We apply pressure to the area and massage it to keep blood out of the vein and to spread the solution after removing the needle. We will tape a pad onto the injection site to keep pressure. The number of shots depends on the number of veins being treated.

You can walk and move soon after the procedure. Being active helps prevent blood clots from forming. We may ask you to wear compression stockings or bandages for about two weeks to keep pressure on the treated veins.

Laser Therapy

Laser treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that helps close off the affected varicose veins. The procedure involves sending strong light bursts into veins to make them disappear.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Jones will discuss your concerns, assess your individual needs, and recommend the most suitable treatment option for your case. He will give you information about the specific procedure and recovery process. You will also have time to clarify any questions you may have.

During the procedure, we will numb the area where the tube or catheter will be put into your vein. Our team will check the vein before and during the procedure using a Doppler ultrasound device. This process uses sound waves to make an image of the vein on a computer screen. We will then insert and guide the catheter into the affected veins by making a small cut or incision in your skin. A laser fiber will be put into the catheter, and as we slowly pull out the catheter, the laser will heat up the vein, causing it to close up and eventually shrink.

You will be encouraged to walk for 30 to 60 minutes after the procedure. Your leg may have bruising, which usually goes away in about two weeks. You may also be asked to wear compression stockings to help prevent swelling in your legs.
