3D rendering of a CT angiography on a heart by BKLYN Cardio

Cardiac computed tomography angiography (CCTA) sounds complicated, but it’s actually quite straightforward. This specialized scan is an important part of understanding and maintaining your heart health, especially if you’re in a higher-risk category. Learn more about the purpose of a CCTA test, what it’s like to get one, and how it might fit into your wellness plan.

What is Cardiac Computed Tomography Angiography?

CCTA is a diagnostic imaging test that gives cardiologists a clear picture of your heart’s arteries, making it possible to spot issues that could lead to heart problems. A computed tomography (CT) scanner creates detailed cross-sectional images of the body using X-ray technology and a special contrast dye. The resulting 3D images allow doctors to see blockages, narrowing, or other issues in the coronary arteries.

CCTA is preferred for its speed, accuracy, and ease. Unlike traditional angiograms, which involve inserting a catheter through an artery to get a view of the heart, CCTA is noninvasive, meaning no incisions, stitches, or downtime. While CCTA doesn’t reveal every aspect of heart health, it’s an effective tool for spotting atherosclerosis, which is plaque buildup that can lead to heart attacks. For this reason, CCTA tests are often recommended for people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease.

How Does a CCTA Test Work?

The process is surprisingly simple. Preparation involves not eating or drinking for a few hours before the test. If you’re on certain medications, like those for diabetes, your doctor may adjust your dosage temporarily.

A slow, stable heart rate is ideal for producing the best images, so you might be given medication to steady your heartbeat before the test. Next, you’ll lie on a bed that slides into the CT machine. When you’re ready, a nurse will insert an IV to administer a contrast dye that makes your arteries visible in the scan. Then, the CT machine will take a series of X-ray images around your chest, which takes about 15 minutes.

When the test is complete, you’re free to head home. The dye will flush out of your body naturally after about 24 hours. You may be advised to drink extra water to speed up this process. Expect your doctor to contact you with the results within a day or two. Based on what the CCTA reveals, you may be asked to undergo further tests, make lifestyle changes, or pursue other treatments to keep your heart healthy.
